ACB 123 KBJ
Common Sense Ohio Blog: Takedown Wednesday Musings — Supreme Court Smackdowns, Budget Battles, and A Slice of Americana
Hey folks, Steve, Norm, and Brett here. We just got done recording another packed episode of Common Sense Ohio, and if you missed it, well — you missed a wild ride. So here’s your dose of Midwestern common sense.
First off, we kicked things off with a history lesson for July 2nd (that’s the real Independence Day, by the way — July 4th just gets all the fireworks). It’s funny how a band of 20-something-year-old “conspirators” could build a nation, while most 20-somethings today are…let’s just say, not out building functioning democracies.
Naturally, we dove into what everyone’s talking about: the Supreme Court showdown between Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson (our “ACB123 KBJ” moment). ACB came out swinging, taking down what she saw as KBJ’s “imperial judiciary” stance with some classic, biting judicial shade. Frankly, we were relieved to see the Court push back on these nation-wide injunctions coming from single district judges. One judge shouldn’t be able to upend national policy, no matter the politics. As Steve loves to say, “You can’t have it both ways.” Make your arguments, but let’s stop forum shopping and get back to real, reasoned legal battles.
Then it was on to the “Big Beautiful Bill” — Congress and Ohio’s latest budget spectacular. Is it perfect? Not even close. Is it better than nothing? Marginally. Ohio’s flat tax, the debates over property taxes, DeWine’s 67 line-item vetoes, billions flying to stadiums, while the regular folks feel the pinch of rising property values and questionable priorities — we chopped it all up with a fair bit of sarcasm and, yeah, irritation.
And of course, we squeezed in hot takes on everything from Supreme Court age-verification on adult sites (hello, Texas), to why Americans get played by sausage-making politics. Plus a tip of the cap to heartfelt July 4th celebrations and a reminder: study actual history, not the filtered TikTok version.
Until next Wednesday, keep your sanity, enjoy some fireworks, and don’t let the budget bill get you down.
